The 11 remaining members of the South Korean boy band EXO will perform three consecutive concerts in Seoul this week, without Kris Wu Yifan, (known to fans as simply Kris), who is allegedly suing the group's record label, SM Entertainment, to get out of his record contract.
In a statement posted to SM's website on Wednesday, the record label confirmed that the shows booked from May 23 through May 25 at Seoul's Olympic Gymnasium will proceed without the 23-year-old rapper, but promised that the remaining EXO band members are up to the challenge.
"The 11 members are currently doing their very best to prepare a high quality concert and we promise that it will be a spectacular performance that will live up to the fans' expectations," the statement read.
Kris, who is the frontman of EXO-M, one of the band's two "sub-units" (groups containing selected band members) has reportedly been out of contact with SM Entertainment and even his own lawyers at Hankyul Law Firm, after filing the lawsuit on May 15, leaving representatives from both companies to only speculate on his plans.
"We still have not been able to get in contact with Kris and his lawyer also has not responded at all to the possibility of his attendance," a representative for SM Entertainment told the Korean publication Star News.
But, as the saying goes, the show must go on.
"Because all aspects of the concert had to be suddenly adjusted to fit 11 members, the members and staff are in a difficult situation, but they are doing their best," the SM rep said.
Representatives from Hankyul Law Firm, or anyone else related to Kris or his management, has yet to comment about what the rapper's plans are. Though some Chinese reports (which prompted legal action on the part of SM Entertainment) claim Kris has been in China receiving medical treatment in relation to a possible heart condition.
The rapper reportedly never returned from an EXO showcase in China earlier this month. Several media outlets have reported Kris is currently staying in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
In an interview Wednesday with The Korea Herald, a Hankyul representative would not speculate on Kris's past or future actions, but did confirm he was currently out of the country.
"When he will return to Korea is uncertain," the rep said.
